08: monetised membership expansion

An independent videographer and educator had a growing social following but struggled to convert that audience into a sustainable paid membership community. The Patreon platform was underutilised, with minimal recurring revenue and little engagement from existing members.

I was brought in to transform the Patreon channel into a thriving membership community, where the goal was to design a system that would:

  • increase paid membership sign-ups

  • improve long-term member retention

  • foster peer-to-peer engagement among members.

the strategy

  • Conduct audience behaviour analysis to understand key motivations (exclusive learning, direct access, peer support)

  • Redesign the membership journey, introducing tiered benefits and clearer value propositions

  • Implement engagement systems: monthly challenges, feedback sessions, and community Q&As to keep members active

  • Create a content roadmap that delivered premium, interactive experiences (e.g., tutorials, behind-the-scenes, live coaching) designed to build trust and increase lifetime value.

the impact

  • Doubled the number of paying members in 3 months.

  • Increased member retention by 35% through structured engagement touchpoints

  • Boosted average monthly revenue by +70%, creating a sustainable income stream

  • Strengthened community cohesion as measured by peer-to-peer interactions and repeat participation in challenges.
